Spironolactone 25 mg coated tablets

Why is spironolactone used?

• You can take spironolactone for the following conditions:
• Nephrotic syndrome - a kidney disorder that causes too much fluid in the body
• Ascites – the presence of too much fluid in the abdomen; edema – the accumulation of fluid under the skin or in one or more body cavities, leading to swelling, for example, due to cirrhosis of the liver.
• Malignant ascites - fluid containing cancerous cells that accumulates in the abdomen
• Primary aldosteronism - an increase in fluids in the body due to an overabundance of a hormone called aldosterone.

Do not use spironolactone:

• Do not take spironolactone if:
• You are allergic to spironolactone or any of the other ingredients in this medicine.
• You cannot urinate
• You have acute kidney disease
• You have Addison's disease
• You have hyperkalemia (high levels of potassium in the blood).
• You are breastfeeding
• You were taking water pills (potassium-sparing diuretics) or any potassium supplements
• You were taking eplerenone (a drug for high blood pressure).

Warnings and precautions:

• Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking spironolactone if:
• You were suffering from kidney disease, especially children with high blood pressure or liver disease.
• Your doctor will routinely assess you, especially if you are elderly.
• You have difficulty urinating
• You have a disease that can lead to an imbalance of electrolytes in the blood, such as potassium or sodium.
• You have severe heart failure
• You are pregnant

Possible side effects:

• Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention if you experience tightness in the throat, swelling of the eyes, face, lips, or tongue, feel faint, or have difficulty breathing.
• Stop using the product if you experience hives or itching on your face or body.

Other medications and spironolactone:

• Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines. Your doctor may want to change your dose of spironolactone if you are taking any of the following:
• Digoxin or carbenoxolone
• High blood pressure medications, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
• Other diuretics
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, indomethacin, mefenamic acid, or ibuprofen
• Potassium supplements
• Heparin or low molecular weight heparin (medicines used to prevent blood clotting)
• Antipyrine
• Medications known to cause hyperkalemia (high blood potassium levels)
• Trimethoprim and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole

How to use spironolactone:

• The adult dose ranges from 25 mg to 400 mg of spironolactone daily, depending on the condition being treated.
• If you are unsure how much to take, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

How to store spironolactone:

• Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
• Do not store your tablets above 30 degrees Celsius.
• Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the label on the package, carton or bottle after EXP.
• The expiry date refers to the last day of the same month.
